Polygon-based “Collectible Avatars” has been begun with airdropping as the first step towards a wider push for including blockchain technology by Reddit, social media network.
In the past week, Reddit asked some users to select avatars from four collections “Aww Friends”, “The Singularity”, “Drip Squad”, “Meme Team” based on their website participation.
The collectibles are listed on the popular NFT marketplace OpenSea. At the time of writing, “The Singularity” collection is selling for just over $15. “Drip Squad” collection is over $42.

Selected artists on Reddit created collections, with changeable prices from $9.99 to $99.99. Buyers can use these avatars on other websites and Reddit with all rights.
On Reddit’s own blockchain wallet Vault, the avatars may be controlled and preserved. Community points powered by blockchain are presently available to users of Vault, and they can be used to purchase in-app items like badges.
In its user communications, Reddit has not referred to these avatars as NFTs. Blockchain technology, however, was still a long-term goal for the company, according to a prior statement: “We see blockchain as one approach to deliver greater empowerment and independence to communities on Reddit.”
Earlier this year, Reddit started to test new feature that allows users to set any Ethereum-based NFT for profile photo. In 2021, Reddit released limited-edition NFTs called CryptoSnoos.
